Her new single makes use of her distinctive ethereal sound with her soaring vocals and her edgy melodies. How Are You? is just as dreamy, rock ‘n’ roll and exciting as what has come before but this time we have dance beats that change the pace and propel her even further into musical genius status.

Northern Revive Magazine caught up with BETHY and this is what she said:

Northern Revive: Introduce yourself in less than 10 words…..

BETHY: Hey I’m BETHY, a singer, songwriter, artist!

NR: What made you want to get into music?

B: Music has always been a huge part of my life and I’ve always been fascinated by how you can translate your emotions through music and visual art.

I grew up in a musical household, we had a grand piano in the dining room and my brother would always be guitar shredding upstairs. When I was little I would always be singing and putting on performances around the house.

I started writing my own music properly at around age 14, and I loved being able to create this imaginary audio/visual world where I could express myself.

NR: What comes first lyrics or music?

B: It depends!

Often I have inspiration for lyrics and focus on the message of the song, then figure out the melody and everything else later. Writing lyrics is like poetry, in fact one of the tracks on my album ‘UTOPIA!’ is literally a spoken word poem called ‘Emptiness’.

Though sometimes it’s fun to just focus on making a catchy song, with great melodies and production, and then figure out what lyrics will flow with the song. That’s what I did with my song ‘Melodies of a Broken Heart’.

NR: What was the last track you played on Spotify?

B: Cold Desert by Kings of Leon. LOVE that song.

NR: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

B: Focus on love, learn from mistakes and always have gratitude.

NR: What’s in store for you when all this is over?

B: I’m really looking forward to playing live shows and shooting more music videos! I’m also excited to just be able to walk around the shop without a facemask on.

page1image5796080NR: How are you coping with lockdown?

B: I’ve been focusing on writing, recording new music and editing videos so it’s been very productive for me! I’m really looking forward to when it’s over though!

NR: How is lock down affecting the music scene?

B: It’s a real shame to see the government’s lack of support and value for musicians and other creative arts. It’s shocking to see festivals and venues having to close, I really hope things will get better soon.

NR: Where can we find out more?

B: My website

Subscribe to my official newsletter for more updates and exclusive content! I have CDs and merch available so be sure to check it out!

NR: Talk us through the new track / video

B: I have a new track called ‘how are you?’ that came out on the 7th April!

I’m so excited for people to hear this song, it’s quite different from anything I’ve done before. I feel my music is constantly improving and I love exploring new sounds and genres.

I called the song ‘how are you’ because I found myself answering this question in autopilot, rather than giving a genuine answer. It’s about the importance of truth and honesty, learning from mistakes, and choosing to have a positive outlook on life.

There is also an amazing music video on the way for this song, so be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel!
