Perfectly timed for Pride Month, Oakland duo LE FOMO have created a celebratory, empowering video to accompany Spoon Revolt.

The track features on their first studio produced LP, Swallow Me Whole, on AnalogueTrash across Europe and on Club Queen Records in North America and beyond.

Swallow Me Whole was created by gender expansive multi-instrumentalists Ess Nelson (vocals, lyrics, synths, bass, beats, arrangement) and Kai Hofius (guitar, drums, lyrics, bass), in Oakland, CA. Their signature phrase is that “we’ll rattle your guts with rawness and cradle you with our catchy riffs” and they return to do so with the video to Spoon Revolt.

Describing themselves as gender expanse wave, synthwave, electro disco, dirty dance punk. “The phrase ‘gender expanse wave’ embodies both the liberatory gender ethos of LE FOMO and our synthwave sound.” Says Ess, “The arc of the sound on our last album, Swallow Me Whole, spanned a few genres, from our nu disco dance anthem, NOTDF, to our pop number Tiny Anchor, to our raw, post-rock ballad, Hot Whiskey, among others.”

Spoon Revolt is a punchy whirlwind of a song, raising a fist to celebrate switchiness– fluidity in being both ‘big spoon’ and ‘little spoon.’ “People tend to get stuck in familiar roles that can be dull and stifling. We wrote Spoon Revolt to jolt us out of that trance and catapult us toward a more playful, expansive energy” says Ess.

The video takes place on the Santa Cruz, CA Boardwalk and follows a band of neon clad spoon revolters led by Ess, the lead vocalist and producer for LE FOMO, as they march, dance, and spoon each other in defiance of the “No Switching” signage.

LE FOMO plan to spend the remainder of 2021 writing new music, generating killer visuals to engage audiences via social media, and getting ready for live shows again! So much has changed in the last year, a live LE FOMO show is going to be pretty different from what it was prior to the pandemic. Envisioning what that will look like is gonna be wild.

Tell us a little about yourselves.

We released our first studio produced LP, Swallow Me Whole, on AnalogueTrash across Europe and on Club Queen Records in North America and beyond in 2020. Swallow Me Whole was created by gender expansive multi-instrumentalists Ess Nelson (vocals, lyrics, synths, bass, beats, arrangement) and Kai Hofius (guitar, drums, lyrics, bass), in Oakland, CA. Our signature phrase is that we’ll rattle your guts with rawness and cradle you with our catchy riffs, and here’s how we describe our album: On a sweaty quest through a sunny afternoon electro dance party to a synthwave post-punk saturated basement to belting in your car to release your pent up anger about your last breakup, Swallow Me Whole blazed into 2020 with a maelstrom of fiery vocals, swooning lyrics, driving bass lines, catchy guitar riffs, shimmering synth, and beats that animate your sweet, sweet cheeks and may just open up that tiny door to your pulsating heart. Swallow Me Whole calls on us to become our fullest, most expansive selves and to find authentic human connection in that place, together. Swallow Me Whole was recorded and mixed by Maryam Qudus at Tiny Telephone and Best House Studios and mastered by Piper Payne at Infrasonic Studios, with additional arrangement and beat programming contributions from Maryam Qudus.

How would you describe your sound and art?

Gender expanse wave, synthwave, electro disco, dirty dance punk. The phrase ‘gender
expanse wave’ embodies both the liberatory gender ethos of LE FOMO and our synthwave
sound. The arc of the sound on our last album, Swallow Me Whole, spanned a few genres, from our nu disco dance anthem, NOTDF, to our pop number Tiny Anchor, to our raw, post-rock ballad, Hot Whiskey, among others. Visually, the LE FOMO graphic signature reflects situationist, synthwave, electroclash, and pop art inspired energy of the 50’s, 80’s and early aughts, the synthesis of an activating vision that is at once new and timeless.

Why do you make music?

It feels good. Sometimes it’s the only thing that feels good. Music is such a pure form of energy, and sharing that with others is one of the best feelings– that connection, that excitement. It transforms our insides and the spaces we inhabit. Music provides us with so much access to emotion, to life energy. I (Ess) lose myself when I don’t make music. Plus, dancing!

Recommend us some music. Who else should we be listening to right now?

TT the Artist, BIIANCO, Polartropica, Helium/Shelium, St. Lucifer, Lafemmebear, Maya
Songbird, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and all the rad Bay Area bands with members that took part in our Spoon Revolt music video: Vice Reine, Colorblock, Fureigh, The Homobiles, Side Pony, and Pleeay.

What are your plans for the rest of 2021?

Writing new music, generating killer visuals to engage our audience via social media, and
getting ready for live shows again! So much has changed in the last year– a live LE FOMO
show is going to be pretty different from what it was prior to the pandemic. Envisioning what that will look like is gonna be wild.
