Introduce yourself in less than 10 words…..
We’re Shaker Neon, a fluorescent London duo making wonky colourful music.
What made you want to get into music?
Tommy: It all started with my older brother, he was into 70s funk and jazz when we were teenagers, and I listened to everything he pointed at! From there moved to London to study jazz, and been playing ever since!
How did you all meet?
We met in London through the jazz scene. We started playing New Orleans jazz around the time Blitz parties were exploding. WE took a journey from there, writing of theatre together, doing writing sessions with other artists, film music, and even musicals.
How is lock down affecting the music scene?
I kept this question in because it was during lockdown that Shaker Neon started up…we
wanted to make some music together, to pass the time when we weren’t playing. WE hammered out a handful of songs, Lose Control was one of those early voicemails that was transformed with Dom’s production and Scarlett Fae’s wicked soulful voice.
What’s the writing process?
Super organic. We go through a lot of versions of each song searching for something that sounds ‘Shaker’…we often say that to each other! There’s a great dynamic, bouncing over
new ideas or random discoveries that can transform a track from a wonky Calypso funk thing to a soulful jam.
What was the last track you played on Spotify?
Anderson Paak – Reaching’ 2 Much
If you could collaborate with any band / person / producer who would it be?
Danger Mouse, Thundercat, perhaps Flying Lotus. These guys are constantly reinventing,
but they have a little spice that’s ALL their own. Their own little universe, which is what we’re trying to dig out with Shaker Neon.
What’s the scene like where you are from?
The London Scene is ridiculously varied, vibrant and rich. We’ve been plugged into the jazz
scene for years and years now and it keeps on throwing up new musicians who are blinding. Cut that with the electronic scene, and near me in east London Cafe Oto and the
experimental stuff that happens there. We fill up on all shades of it. We were at Wolf Alice
the other day, we’ll catch Tame Impala over the summer, meanwhile be down at Ronnie Scott’s for the late show.
Where can we find out more?
We’re on insta @shakerneon, where we’ll be showing the behind the scenes of the production, acoustic versions that expose the songwriting, and stupid videos for the hell of it. Come find us!
Talk us through the new track / video
Emerging from an idea at the piano by Tommy, the track has blossomed into a synth-funk
contender which features the incredible vocalist Scarlett Fae from Brighton. Speaking about the new release, Shaker Neon shares, “Lose Control is about falling hard for someone who doesn’t feel the same way…when friendship turns into something else, one night for them, but much more for you. Only one of you gets hooked. That feeling of attraction and fascination is intoxicating, but when it ain’t returned, it hurts. Your body takes over and you lose control.” Armed with a modern day Minnie Riperton-esque vocal, “Lose Control” is a cosmic experience best served on a good set of speakers or headphones.
