Soulful outfit Gideon King & City Blog reveal cross-genre number ‘Whatchya Gonna Do’

Cross-genre outfit Gideon King & City Blog return with their finest piece of music to date. Titled ‘Whatchya Gonna Do’, this soulful offering could easily become your favourite discovery of 2021. Led by guitarist Gideon King, who has been called a ‘musical genius’ by Huffington Post, Gideon has built up a reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the New York Music Scene. Receiving previous praise from American Songwriter, Vinyl Chapter, and All About Jazz to name a few, Gideon King & City Blog create passionate music that’s destined to leave you dancing around your household.

What made you want to get into music?

Music is the intersection of math and soul, of chaos and order. Its just an endless and flexible algorithm for making us feel something.

How do you transfer that onstage energy to the studio?

You don’t. You change. You become a circumspection monster, slowly trying new things and waiting for the results to come in. Trial and error. Defeat and victory. But actually not. Nothing is as good as it sounds at first or as bad. It is a game of exploring ideas, killing them, reviving them and then of course drinking alcohol. It is a slow collaboration. It’s a little like searching for an apartment in New York City. You need to get to a point of desperation before anything good happens. The energy is different; you bring a certain nervous frenetic energy to the stage and then get carried through the performance by this electric charge. When you go into the studio you are prepared for a war of attrition against the enemy—the song. Tiny little victories somehow get you there ploddingly. Then everyone looks at each other in amazement and something of merit has surfaced. Like a miracle.

How did you all meet?

My drummer Jake, who is sort of the Mayor of music in NYC, introduced me to most of the musicians, assuring me they were killer musicians, nice people, and smart. He was right. The band is a tight family. We are friends.

What was the last track you played on Spotify?

Tea For Two played by a solo jazz guitar guy named Pasquale Grasso. The guy is crazy good.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Gideon King & City Blog would be more famous than Adele. But seriously, that’s my answer.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My manager said to me in polite way one morning, “try and write things people might like.”

What’s in store for you when all this is over?

Oh god. Don’t ask. I hate thinking about that. Maybe I’ll watch Ozark again.

How are you coping with lockdown?

I pretended like it wasn’t happening and got yelled at by people on the street who needed to be mad at something. Basically I was providing a service to them. They needed an outlet for their rage and I was the vessel.

What’s the scene like where you are from?

Honestly, its great in NYC. On any given night there are great musicians playing. There are so many people to collaborate with and so many people with incredible skills and soul. This answer is so boring but its true. Happy answers are so boring. Sorry.
